For while that fabled glow won�t just miraculously arrive in time for the big day, careful planning and prep work can ensure your most radiant self walks down that aisle. To avoid last minute beauty blunders � here�s what you need to do now, and what can wait until your final hours of singlehood�

Get Started Now! (or about 6 months out)

1) Get Great Skin � Now�s the time to address any skin problems you�ve tolerated; rid your skin of acne, sun damage, scars or wrinkles. Book an appointment with your dermatologist and discuss treatment options, such as retinol creams, lasers, skin lighteners or chemical peels.

2) Get In Shape � If you haven�t already, start a fitness and nutrition routine that you can live with - and stick with until your wedding day (and beyond!). Need some motivation? Join the bridal boot camp craze. These fitness programs geared towards brides are popping up all over the country.

3) Plan Your Look � As soon as you�ve found �the dress,� decide how you want to wear your hair and makeup for the big day. Start growing your hair if you think you�ll want it longer. Now�s the time to test new looks. If you�re contemplating a drastic cut or color change � do it now � and leave time to get used to your new do, or change it back.

3-6 Months Out

1 Month Out

Skin Care - Tricking You, Not Your Skin

Your skin is a very clever organ. No matter which in the arsenal of developments in anti aging skin care products are proudly emblazoned on the bottle and in the marketing literature, your skin knows the truth. And whilst it may play the game for a little while, plumping up nicely to give the appearance of looking younger, more even, and less lined, this is only a temporary, somewhat cosmetic ruse. It is actually a biological trick of the light, a chimeraic nod to the quest for youth. Don't be fooled.

Skin care is big business. And there's nothing wrong with that. But whilst its highly entertaining to browse through the shelves and try out the latest pedigree of skin cream, these foot soldiers in the war on wrinkles meet a somewhat tenacious and uncooperative foe in our skin.

Our skin. This multi-layered emissary to the outside world, bearer of our expressions, our joys, our grief. Guard against the invisible tide of micro-organisms that seek to infiltrate our body's first defence against disease and infection. This complex array of cells that every month regenerate and shed, within the constraints of age and the quality of our diet. Our skin is a hard worker and much unappreciated. Often barely nourished despite the money spent on technological promises, we still hope the dream of youth slipping away will be restored.

There is a way to slow the process of aging. But not by applying high tech anti aging creams. By understanding exactly what our skin is, we can find better ways of giving it what it needs. And consequently, we will find ourselves with what we want - more youthful skin.

Our skin is composed of 3 main layers. The outside layer that we apply our anti aging skin care products to is the epidermis. This in turn has 4 to 5 layers, depending on where it is in the body, and whether there is a lot of hair on it. The top layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, serves as a barrier. This is where the cells are continually shedding and where new cells are ultimately pushed up to. These cells have no blood supply, and hence no nutrients or oxygen carried in the blood reach these cells. They are essentially dead in that they cannot engage in the metabolic processes that living cells do. But they do serve very important functions. By creating an impenetrable barrier, they keep out bacteria and other micro organisms, and are thus part of the immune system. But this very function also serves to keep out most of the expensive ingredients in anti aging treatments. And no matter how well an ingredient performs in a laboratory test tube, that does not necessarily translate to reaching the deeper layers of your skin, where the real anti aging work takes place. Most skin care products work only on the stratum corneum, and that is their downfall as anti aging secret agents.

The next layer down from the top is the dermis. This is the layer where wrinkles develop. The dermis consists of living cells, and they are responsible for the structure, integrity and elasticity of the skin. Here collagen is regenerated whilst existing collagen is broken down in the monthly cellular cycle. The production of collagen slows with age and factors like smoking, sun exposure, stress and inadequate nutrition. Other skin nutrients like elastin and hyaluronic acid are found here. Hyaluronic acid for example, helps hold water. As the dermis is composed of living cells, it has a blood supply, which transport nutrients and oxygen to the cells. These capillaries also transport cellular wast like carbon dioxide away. Here you'll also find lymph vessels, sebaceous and sweat glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings for heat and cold.

Fibers from the dermis extend down and into the next main layer, the subcutaneous layer. They anchor the skin to it. The subcutaneous layer in turn attaches to organs like bone and muscles underneath. Here are nerve endings that are sensitive to pressure, blood, lymph vessels, fat cells, collagen and elastin. The subcutaneous layer thins as we age, which creates a more angular appearance.

Moisturizers achieve their temporary effect by trapping water already in the skin. They essentially act as a seal, they do not provide additional water or 'moisture'. The few products that actually work on the deeper layers of the skin are the Retin-A skin care treatments. Vitamin C, though popular, has not conclusively demonstrated that it can reach the deeper layers, the dermis. And even if it did, there is not enough evidence that it actually does anything there.

But the news is not all bad. We can do something, and its not rocket science. If we supply the skin with the nutrients it needs, with good, fresh fruit and vegetables, and good quality fats and protein, or even supplements as a boost. Then, and only then, will we stall the clock at a more agreeable hour.

Q. What are some myths about breast-feeding?

There are many myths about breast feeding such, as you cannot take any medication while breastfeeding. Most medications are safe for you but you should check with your doctor first. If s/he does become ill, it will not be severe.

Thrush is a yeast infection in the baby�s mouth that looks like little white patches on their tongue and the inside of the cheeks. Mom can continue to breast feed as long as both she and the baby are treated with a medication.

Q. Can I breast-feed while taking medication?

Yes you can breast feed while taking medication. Be sure before you take anything that you check with your doctor first to be on the safe side. Most medications are safe but it�s better to err on the side of caution.

Yes any woman can breast feed provided that she hasn�t had breast surgery that has affected the milk ducts. The size of her breasts does not affect breast-feeding.

This is an outdated term that referred to plugged milk ducts. In fact, if you have a fever you have Mastitis not Milk Fever that is a misnomer.

It is highly unlikely that your baby can become allergic to breast milk. Talk to your pediatrician to see what he might suggest. You might need to take your baby to a gastro-enterologist for testing but continue breast-feeding unless you are told to stop.

Q. Can breast feeding mother drink caffeinated beverages?

Yes coffees, teas, and soda are okay but in limited amounts. The caffeine does pass through your milk to the baby. It can make your baby restless and fussy.

Q. Can I drink carbonated beverages while breast-feeding?

In moderation carbonated beverages are okay in limited amounts. Two a day should not affect your baby. The concern is the large amounts of phosphorous that are in carbonated beverage and this is for all women; it may decrease the amount of calcium you will be able to absorb.

Q. What can I do if my baby refuses to breast-feed?

If your baby refuses to breast feed you can try feeding him while he�s asleep or very sleepy. You can try varying positions while you are feeding. You could also try breast feeding your baby while in motion, for example rocking, walking, or riding in the car.

Q. Can I lose weight safely while I am breast-feeding?

While you are breast-feeding don�t worry too much about losing weight. It is important that you east a very healthy diet in order to maintain your milk supply. Check with your doctor as s/he might have helpful hints for you.

Q. Can Diabetic mothers breast-feed their babies?

Yes, Diabetic mothers can breast feed. After birth babies of Diabetic mothers must be monitored for low blood sugar, a high hematocrit, and possibly low calcium. Pumping their breasts as soon after birth as possible to help bring in their milk supply. This will make it easier for their babies to learn how to nurse.

Q. What are some of the benefits of breastfeeding for my baby and me?

The benefits of breast feeding for women is that the risk of breast and ovarian cancer is reduced, it helps you to lose some of the pregnancy weight and may lower the risk of osteoporosis. Another benefit is it saves money on formula and bottles.
The benefits of breast feeding for babies is that their mothers milk protects them from allergens and eczema, reduces stomach upset, and lessens the incidence of SIDS. It also protects the baby from such diseases as Spinal Meningitis, Type I Diabetes, and Hodgkin's Lymphoma. There is also some suggestion it may help prevent obesity later in life.

After WLS: Surgical Thigh Lift

Our LivingAfterWLS frequent contributor and my good friend Kim Stover underwent a surgical thigh lift yesterday. She is home today recovering nicely and has found a way to use the computer laying down. For the next two weeks she must lay down or stand, she cannot be in a sitting position. I look forward to update from her soon.

Though not often talked about a thigh lift is a common procedure following massive weight loss. For women it is biologically naturally to carry much fat in the thighs so when weight is lost excessive loose skin remains.

Also called a leg lift, the reconstructive surgery removes the loose, hanging skin in the thigh and buttocks. The procedure is intended to tighten and firm these areas, improving overall body contour. The 2-4 hour surgery removes lax skin and fat and places the scars in locations that can be hidden within the bikini line.

Commonly during a leg lift, an incision is made in the upper inner thighs (possibly into the lower inner thigh), and the excess skin and fat is lifted at the surgeon�s discretion. He or she will determine how much can safely be removed. Once the excess is removed, the remaining skin is closed with sutures that can be removed in about a week. The type of incision and a patient�s resulting scar will be determined by the location and amount of excess skin and fat. It may be limited to the upper groin crease or possibly extend to the knee area if this region requires treatment.

Like any surgical procedure there are risks and benefits that will be discussed at your consultation. Patients generally return to work two weeks after surgery and can resume strenuous activity within 4 to 6 weeks upon the surgeon�s approval.

Risks of a surgical thigh lift include scarring, wound healing problems, infection, blood or fluid collection, loss of sensation, asymmetry, wrinkling of skin, lumpiness, areas of depression. Nerve damage may cause weakness in foot or leg. Possibility of permanent discoloration.

In most cases results are long-lasting, but subject to weight fluctuation. Patients should maintain a steady weight following a thigh lift or any cosmetic contouring surgery.

The bad news? 90% of women suffer from cellulite.
The great news? Cellulite is reversible! (So they say - read on!!)

Cellulite is the name given to build ups of fat that push against the connective tissue beneath a person's skin, predominately on hips, thighs, and buttocks. This causes the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker like the surface on an orange. The term cellulite originated in France more than 150 years ago and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960s. Other names for cellulite include orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin, the mattress phenomenon, and hail damage.

Treatments Claiming to Get Rid of Cellulite:

Electrical Muscle Stimulators (EMS) and Iontophoresis Devices

Muscle stimulators are a device for certain conditions - to relax muscle spasms, increase blood circulation, prevent blood clots, and rehabilitate muscle function after a stroke. But many health spas and figure salons claim that muscle stimulators can remove wrinkles, perform face lifts, reduce breast size, reduce a "beer belly," and remove cellulite.

Body Wrapping

Wraps or garments, with or without special lotions or creams applied to the skin - they may be applied to parts of the body or to the entire body. Supposedly fat will "melt away" and "up to 2 inches from the problem areas can be lost in just one hour."

Cellasene - Cellulite Pill

This herbal product is being promoted as a cellulite remedy. The ingredients are evening primrose oil, dried fucus vesiculosis extract, gelatine, fish oil, glycerol, soya oil, grape seed, bioflavonoids, soya lecithin, fatty acids, dried sweet clover extract, dried ginkgo biloba extract, and iron oxide. To be taken twice daily (or three times per day for an "intensive" program) for two months and then once daily for maintenance!

The Lumicell Cellulite Treatment: offers penetrating properties of infra-red and magenta light - enabling penetration into the heart of the cell with light - this cell busting action enables deep tissue massage. Fat cells break down and the skin becomes smooth and dimple free.

Mesotherapy - fat dissolving solution - tiny injections of vitamins and minerals and a special enzyme - lecithin - are placed just beneath the skin. Lecithin is responsible for breaking down fats in the body - it dissolves away the underlying fat, shrinking fat cells.

Liposuction - is permanent fat removal. The Liposuction Procedure - for excessively overweight people, allows for large amounts of fat to be removed over several sessions.

However - several factors influence whether you have cellulite and how much you have. Your genes, your gender, the amount of fat on your body, your age, and the thickness of your skin are all associated with the amount of cellulite you have or how visible it is.
In most cases reduction of a particular part can be accomplished only as part of an overall weight-reduction program. Some procedures may temporarily improve the appearance of dimpled areas, liposuction may permanently help in some cases.

Drinking more water will reduce cellulite:

Drinking more water will not help any skin condition unless you're dehydrated. Nor does drinking more water eliminate any cellulite-causing toxins.

Exercise will prevent cellulite:

Even the fittest athlete can develop cellulite. However - exercise does burn fat and increase muscle.

Liposuction removes cellulite:

Liposuction is mainly beneficial for contour improvements for fat deposits - not as a primary cellulite treatment.

A healthy diet will prevent cellulite:

Specific foods won't prevent or cure cellulite - however - junk food that makes you fat may make you more prone to dimple.

Cellulite only occurs in women:

Some men do get cellulite - however - far fewer than females.

But..bear in mind..every medical and scientific test has shown that Cellulite is no different from ordinary fat in . It is not proven whether any cellulite lotion, cellulite cream,
cellulite jel, cellulite pills or cellulite massager can reduce/increase cellulite versus ordinary fat. Some treatments that promise to get rid of cellulite just cause your skin to
puff up through deep massaging, temporarily reducing the appearance of cellulite.

So - the only effective way to reduce cellulite is the same one which reduces ordinary fat - exercise!

Family fitness is fun! So, how do you get your family off the sofa and encourage them to get moving with you? It can be a simple task if you find an exercise program that the entire family can enjoy!

We all know that too many Americans are overweight and even more that don�t follow a regular exercise program. It is up to mom and dad to initiate some movement within their own household. There�s an old saying that the �family that plays together, stays together.� This is the approach you should take to get your family moving! It�s not exercise, it�s time to play!

First, you should pay close attention to what everyone in the family likes to do. For example, if both you and your spouse are tennis fanatics, tennis should definitely be on the exercise agenda. If your son is an avid golfer, you need to learn to swing! If your daughter is a devoted jogger, guess who needs to jog too? Find out what everyone in the family likes to do (and you probably already know) and then do it as a family!

Your family�s fitness is important and the fitness schedule should be something that you will stick with throughout the year with a �plan B� if the weather prohibits the ability to follow through with one of your preferred activities. Make sure that everyone in the family gets to choose an activity to insure overall enthusiasm and participation from everyone! While planning your Family Fitness plan, you need to start planning some major changes within the kitchen and refrigerator as well. It�s a good time to throw out all of the stale chips and make a commitment to replace the unhealthy choices with healthy alternatives!

Vegetables like carrot sticks, celery sticks, and fruits like apples, bananas, seedless grapes, fig newtons as well as air-popped popcorn, graham crackers and pretzels are excellent choices that children and teens will grab without a second thought if you make them available. Fill your fruit bowl, refrigerator, and cabinet with the healthier snacks and watch how your entire family doesn�t even notice a significant difference. While you�re at it, fill the refrigerator with bottled water and a variety of fruit juices. Diet sodas are loaded with sodium so toss them out the door too!

You can make some subtle changes that your family will appreciate you for later in life. Now is the time to make a healthy change for you and your family. Don�t even mention the changes in the kitchen. Your children and teenagers will likely just grab something when they are in search of a snack. If you announce that the �family is going to start eating more nutritious meals and snacks� what kind of appeal does that have to the child who was raised on chicken tenders from Burger King?

Healthy living is maybe the greatest way to care for your family. It starts with you and most likely, your children will continue to do what they learned to do at home once they spread their wings and fly solo. Make sure you provide the healthy start they need to carry with them a lifetime!

You are what you eat...

It�s something we�ve heard all our lives, and it�s true. Our health is the end result of the food we eat, the nutrients we take in and how our bodies absorb them.

In order to stay healthy you need to implement some basic dietary rules:

� Maximise your nutrient intake from fresh food (particularly green leafy vegetables, meat, fish and eggs)

� Minimise your loss of nutrients (through too much caffeine and carbonated, fizzy or soft drinks for example)

� Perform a moderate amount of exercise � for example about 20 minutes per day to reduce your risk of diseases affecting women including osteoporosis, arthritis and heart disease.

In terms of general health, most scientists now agree that a multi-vitamin (and mineral) supplement is useful for the prevention of chronic disease - this is why women�s health supplements are so important. Recently, even the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article linking the inadequate intake of vitamins to chronic diseases.

Healthy diet - The important thing to realise is that if you don�t start by following the simple dietary advice above, then you�ll be more prone to disease and illness.

The following is a summary of the women�s health supplements which can help with different women�s health challenges.

Seven � right this quantity of words, numbers, concepts and names we can remember with ease, with only one mentioning, not memorizing, that is why seven is considered to be a number of wisdom � we do not need the eighth miracle of the world, eighth day of a week, eighth color of rainbow, if we hardly can keep them in our memory?

Eight � consists of seven plus one and means something unnecessary, and we should still investigate whether it�s good or bad, may be this is prosperity, or may be this is some trouble.

Nine � a number of wisdom, as a woman�s pregnancy lasts for 9 months and as a result a baby is born, whom you can compare with a long-awaited idea. A group of 9 persons can discuss an idea and find one wise decision, and bigger quantity of people turns every discussion into row and needs a guide, directing a meeting.

Numbers, exceeding nine, we treat like �many�, and they lose their bright notional meaning for us.
